Originally from Ballincollig, Stephen played his amateur golf in Lee Valley Golf Club. The highlight of his amateur career was representing Munster in the Boys Interprovincial Matches in 2000.

Always wanting to be a club professional Stephen started his PGA training in March 2003 working as assistant professional to Paddy O Boyle in Bandon Golf Club.

In September 2005 Stephen moved to Rathsallagh Golf Club to work as assistant professional at the Brendan McDaid Golf Academy.

Stephen graduated as a fully qualified member of the PGA in 2007. Stephen remained at the Brendan McDaid Golf Academy both in Rathsallagh Golf Club and Carlow driving range until Feb 09.
